NAIC Meeting To Use Slimmed-Down Process

NU Online News Service, March 10, 1:00 p.m. EST?Despite misgivings by some, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners will start its spring meeting Saturday in New York using a new streamlined structure.[@@]

Yesterday, the NAIC approved a new framework that will focus the Kansas City, Mo.-based organization's work and reduce the number of working groups and task forces at work during the gathering that runs through next Tuesday.

While commissioners and many insurers have been generally supportive of the change, some worry that important work already being done will be lost in the shuffle.

Larry Mirel, District of Columbia insurance commissioner, expressed concern that "we are losing important work."

In response, NAIC President and South Carolina Insurance Director Ernst Csiszar said that work would not be lost and is being incorporated into existing groups. "None of us want to lose the work we've had, but there are too many meetings and committees."
