NU Online News Service, Jan. 29, 11:32 a.m. EST?The Property Casualty Insurers Association of America announced that former Louisiana State Representative Charles McMains Jr., R-Baton Rouge, has joined as the group's local counsel in Louisiana.[@@]

"Charles will play an important role in representing our members' interests in the state capital," said Greg LaCost, regional manager and counsel for PCI. The association said its member companies write 36 percent of the total Louisiana property-casualty insurance market. PCI, based in Des Plaines, Ill., was formed Jan. 8 when the National Association of Independent Insurers and the Alliance of American Insurers merged.

This month, Mr. McMains also was appointed to serve as PCI's representative to the Louisiana Property and Casualty Insurance Commission. The commission will work on researching and studying laws and programs that affect automobile insurance rates and the availability and affordability of property and casualty insurance, including workers' compensation and homeowners insurance in the state, PCI said.

Mr. McMains retired recently from the Louisiana House of Representatives after serving there for 10 years. During the last six years of his public service, Mr. McMains was chairman of the House Committee on Civil Law & Procedure and a floor leader for Gov. M.J. Foster. In those capacities, PCI said, he authored a number of tort reform legislative measures.
