NER To Report Equipment Theft Figures

NU Online News Service, Jan. 27, 9:24 a.m. EST?A report analyzing patterns and criminal elements behind heavy equipment theft in the United States will be released Friday, The National Equipment Register announced.[@@]

The study looks at construction and farm equipment losses and recoveries. Its statistical information comes from NER's database of more than 30,000 theft reports and figures from the Insurance Services Office. NER said the report seeks to answer questions concerning who steals how much of what equipment, from where, how, why and where does it go?

According to the New York-based Registry, the goal of the study is to provide equipment owners, insurance companies and law enforcement with information to help focus risk management and investigation resources in the most effective manner. To achieve this, statistics are put into context through footnotes, analyzed and conclusions are drawn that relate to both the protection and investigation of heavy equipment, NER said.

The report provides statistics on thefts in 2003 by state, type of theft location and type of equipment. It also looks at trends since 1995 that compare equipment theft against other types of loss such as damage. The report also examines what type of equipment is being recovered and where. These statistics are used to suggest underlying reasons for the high level of theft and low levels of recovery and to gauge the size of the overall problem.

NER said similar reports will be published every January to help track trends and utilize the growing volume of data tracked by NER. The full report will be available on the NER Web site at www.NERusa.com. NER said its member companies may request a more detailed breakdown of data.
