Court Okays A St. Paul's Asbestos Settlement
NU Online News Service, Jan. 28, 3:19 p.m. EST?The St. Paul Companies said today it has secured court approval for its June 2002 asbestos-related settlement with MacArthur Co. and its related businesses, and the court has also confirmed MacArthur's proposed plan of reorganization.[@@]
The okay came from U.S. Bankruptcy Court Northern District of California for the 2002 settlement involving The St. Paul's agreement to settle asbestos claims against its subsidiary USF&G Company by policyholders Western MacArthur and Western Asbestos.
The settlement cost for The St. Paul was around $975 million, but after taking out reinsurance recoverable and application of reserves, the insurer took a $380 million charge to its 2002 second-quarter earnings. The charge had added more than 40 points to the insurer's second-quarter combined ratio in 2002.
The St. Paul had announced previously that it completed its funding obligations under the settlement in Jan. 2003.
