NUCO Tackles WC Woes At WCEC

The continuing threat of terrorism, the battle for legislative reform and the rise of insurance fraud will be among the leading issues debated during "National Trends in Workers Compensation," presented by the National Underwriter Company, corporate parent of National Underwriter, as part of the 58th Annual Workers Compensation Educational Conference, to be held Aug. 17-20 in Orlando.

The conferences keynote address, "The Road Ahead in Workers Compensation," will be presented by Stephen W. Lilienthal, chairman and chief executive officer of CNA Insurance Companies.

Breakout sessions in this years National Trends track include presentations on national legislative trends, fighting fraud, improving back-to-work policies and handling angry claimants.

Sam Friedman, publisher and editor-in-chief of National Underwriter, will moderate a panel discussion on terrorism and its effects on workers comp insurers. He will be joined by Robert Hartwig, senior vice president and chief economist of the Insurance Information Institute; Robert Purdy, zonal executive vice president of AIG/American Home Assurance Co.; and David Schrader, senior vice president of INSTRAT for Guy Carpenter & Company.

"In the two years since the Sept. 11 terrorists attacks, the United States has fought wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and sought to disrupt terrorist network worldwide," said Mr. Hartwig. "Are workers comp insurers any less exposed to the threat of terrorism as a result? Have advances in the modeling of terrorism risk and the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act of 2002 significantly increased the industry's confidence when it comes to assuming workers' comp exposure? This session will explore the many lingering concerns insurers have when it comes to terrorism and workers compensation coverage."

Other session presenters will include experts from the American Insurance Association, the Alliance of American Insurers, the National Association of Independent Insurers, MarketStance, the National Council on Compensation Insurance, the Coalition Against Insurance Fraud, the Insurance Services Office, The Hartfords Specialty Risk Services, Travelers, the Workers Transition Network, GuilfordPare, and the International Insurance Institute.
