Farmers A Good Older Workers Employer
NU Online News Service, Oct. 2, 2:59 p.m. EDT?AARP, the nonprofit organization for people age 50 and older, named Farmers Insurance Group to its 2003 list of the 25 "Best Employers for Workers over 50."
The Washington, D.C.-based association said each of the honorees excelled in many of the categories that were evaluated, including recruitment practices, continuing opportunities for advancement and training to upgrade workplace skills, flexible work schedules, and benefits for current and retired employees.
Michael Kent, vice president of human resources at Los Angeles-based Farmers Insurance, said workers over 50 are "a very loyal and dedicated part of [Farmers'] workforce."
"They are a core part of our success and we are glad they choose to work for us," Mr. Kent said.
"Congratulations to Farmers Insurance Group on being recognized as a 2003 AARP Best Employer for Workers over 50," said Deborah Russell, manager of economic security and work at AARP. "Farmers is ahead of the curve in recognizing the value of the mature worker."
In all, three companies in the insurance sector made AARP's list this year, the association told National Underwriter.
In addition to Farmers, Lincoln Financial Group in Philadelphia, which offers life insurance products, and the Des Moines, Iowa-based Principal Financial Group, a provider of life and health insurance, were among AARP's pick of best employers for workers over 50 in 2003.
