Actuary Conference: Insolvencies, Other Topics

NU Online News Service, Oct. 2, 2:00 p.m. EDT?Underwriting cycles, the impact of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act and coping with insolvencies will be featured topics at the annual meeting of the Casualty Actuarial Society, Nov. 9-12 at the New Orleans Marriott.

The featured speaker will be Rushworth M. Kidder, who has worked to refine guidelines for ethical decision-making at his Institute for Global Ethics, in Camden, Maine. The Institute has developed ethics training programs for international corporations, nonprofits, government entities and prisons.

The group said three general sessions are planned:

? "Underwriting Cycles: Are They Inevitable?" will explore the environmental, structural and behavioral factors that give rise to the underwriting cycle, and examine the situation as it exists today.

? "Sarbanes-Oxley Act and the Actuary" will feature a roundtable discussion addressing how this Act has affected the actuarial profession today and how it will in the future. Panelists will examine current and future changes in insurance companies, audit firms and non-audit consulting firms.

? "Insurer Failures–Does the Past Teach Anything?" will discuss causes of insolvencies over the years (natural catastrophes, costly loss liabilities like asbestos reserves, erosion in the value of insurer investment portfolios) and will review the industry's historical coping mechanisms, such as guaranty funds.
