Helping insurers make diverse XML standards work together is the goal of two new products offered by software developer Swingtide, Inc. QoB Lab and QoB Assistant are the first two in an integrated suite that will automate the process of managing and analyzing XML-based services.
Indiana Farmers Mutual Insurance was part of the beta testing for Swingtide. Programmer/analyst Tony Cox says the insurer purchased an XML-based policy administration system last fall, and Swingtide approached the carrier about participating in the testing. Swingtide offers a way to lay the foundation as we move forward, says Cox. He describes the Swingtide products as an eye-opener. Indiana Farmers Mutual has not been a technology leader in the insurance industry, notes Cox, but using XML will help the company break through. Weve got to be able to accept [an agents] XML, and hes got to be able to accept ours, and we have to be able to talk, says Cox. If we dont implement the same kind of standards, and if we dont start planning for that in the beginning, it can get kind of ugly down the road.
Indiana Farmers Mutual began using the product in February to administer new BOP coverage on its XML-based policy administration system. Renewals and changes to the BOP coverage will come later as will other personal lines products. All the commercial lines are first, Cox says. Were slowly going to add in rating for auto coverage and things of that nature.
The need to be flexible in the IT world is not always understood by users on the business side, but Cox believes flexibility is what will get Indiana Farmers Mutual employees to appreciate the XML-based program. Its harder for them right now, but they are going to love what it does for them, he says.
The QoB Lab is a three-day, intensive, hands-on, in-person technology session under the guidance of leading XML experts. The QoB Assistant is a vendor-neutral, cross-standards productivity tool for XML interoperability. The QoB Assistant blends a pre-populated knowledge base with an XML project-planning tool and an online community. It delivers distilled, relevant, and cross-referenced intelligence on 12 different XML standards, breaking them down into more than 250 different interoperability elements in the areas of XML security, messaging, transactions, and payload.
Pricing for QoB Lab starts at $9,995 for three attendees. The pricing for QoB Assistant is $14,995 for a three-seat license. Swingtide offers a price of $19,995 for a combination of the two products.
