InVEST Names Teacher Of The Year

NU Online News Service, Aug. 13, 3:50 p.m. EDT?Todd Tyni from James Monroe High School in North Hills, Calif., was named 2003 InVEST Teacher of the Year, InVEST announced today.

InVEST, affiliated with the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America based in Alexandria, Va., is an educational program dedicated solely to developing a pool of qualified insurance recruits in high schools and community colleges throughout the country.

"Todd has taught the InVEST program at James Monroe High School for the past eight years and has been an exceptional leader to the students," said Barbara Miller-Richards, InVEST executive director in a statement.

Mr. Tyni, who has served as a member on the InVEST National Teacher Task Force for the past two years, is an editor and contributor to the InVEST teacher's manual and textbook.

He has taken students on field trips to different companies and agencies, hosted various speakers in his class, and placed many students in career positions, according to InVEST.

He also has participated in numerous Insurance Brokers & Agents of San Fernando Valley events where students interact with adults in real-world business settings. He currently is mentoring other local high school teachers who are forming their own InVEST programs.

In 1996, Mr. Tyni earned the Teacher of the Year Award from the Greater Los Angeles area's Fulfillment Fund. He has developed a curriculum for introducing students to general office careers by providing them with real-world experience at Washington Mutual's corporate headquarters in Chatsworth, Calif., InVEST said.

"We are proud to recognize Todd as our 2003 Teacher of the Year," said Ms. Miller-Richards. "Todd has committed so much of his energy and talent to InVEST. For years he has been an enthusiastic and dedicated proponent of the principles of the program."
