InVEST Doubles Scholarship Awards

NU Online News Service, June 5, 11:14 a.m. EDT?An insurance brokers' group announced it has awarded $40,000 in scholarships to a select group of students, doubling its scholarship awards from last year.

The InVEST program provided four high school seniors with $5,000 scholarships, while eight other seniors received $2,000 scholarships. Two community college students were awarded $2,000 scholarships.

InVEST, affiliated with the Alexandria, Va.-based Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America, annually awards scholarships with the support of company sponsors. This year's sponsors were Media Marketing Inc. and DORIS Insurance Systems.

Scholarship prospects submitted essays describing the influence and benefits of InVEST on their educational plans. The quality of the essay, combined with the applicant's grade point average, extracurricular activities and college entrance exam scores were factors in selecting the winners.

The recipients of the $5,000 scholarships were:

? Amy LaVenture from St. Petersburg Catholic High School in St. Petersburg, Fla.

? Mike Choyma and Tracy Turner, both from Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando, Fla.

? Andre Martin from East Hartford High School in East Hartford, Conn.

Recipients of $2,000 scholarships were:

? Ana Teixeita from Dr. Phillips High.

? Jessica Benson from East Hartford High.

? Ashley Farino and Thomas Pirko from Dryden High School in Dryden, N.Y.

? Nicole Miller from Jones High School in Orlando.

? Laura Colbath from Spaulding High School in Rochester, N.H.

? Said Sharif from Abraham Lincoln High School in Denver.

? Samantha Gonzalez from Lakewood Ranch High School in East Bradenton, Fla.

? Traci Fansler and Dorian Cobb from Grossmont College, San Diego.

Founded in 1970, InVEST is an education program that prepares more than 6,000 students each year for insurance-related careers with a hands-on curriculum taught in high schools and community colleges.
