Snowstorm Pummels Midwestern And Eastern States
NU Online News Service, Feb. 17, 7:55 p.m. EST -- A snowstorm swept through the Midwest over the weekend and dumped more than 18 inches of snow on many Northeastern communities today.
The effects of the storm may have been reduced by the fact that government offices and businesses were closed for President's Day, but the storm shut down airports, stopped sporting events and jolted businesses that had intended to open today.
Damage estimates were not immediately available.
Government officials have compared the storm to the blizzard that hit the Northeast in 1996. The 1996 blizzard and ensuing flooding caused about $3 billion in damage, and a 1993 blizzard caused about $5 billion in damage, according to the National Climate Data Center, Asheville, N.C.
The Property Claim Services unit of the Insurance Services Office Inc., Jersey City, N.J., estimated in 1996 that insured damages amounted to about $585 million for the 1996 blizzard and $1.75 billion for the 1993 blizzard.
