Arthur J. Gallagher Names New CFO

NU Online News Service, Feb. 3, 3:46 p.m. EST?Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. announced today that Douglas K. Howell would join the insurance brokerage firm on March 3 as its new chief financial officer.

Mr. Howell, 41, replaces executive vice president and chief financial officer Michael J. Cloherty, who left the position in September of 2002. He remains under contract with the firm as a special advisor to the chief executive officer.

Mr. Howell comes to the Itasca, Ill-based firm from 21st Century Insurance Group, a subsidiary of New York-based insurer AIG, where he was senior vice president and chief financial officer.

J. Patrick Gallagher Jr., the firm's president and chief executive officer, credited Mr. Howell with turning around 21st Century.

"His skills in strategic planning, product innovation and rigorous fiscal management will be a great asset," Mr. Gallagher said in a statement, "and he will play a strategic role in helping us continue our organic growth and our expansion through acquisitions."

Mr. Howell said he was looking forward to his future at Gallagher.
