Discipline Requires Education
To the Editor:
Thank you for highlighting the need for the industry to return to underwriting basics in your Sept. 2 "Editorial Comment," headlined, "Is Underwriting Discipline Here for the Long Haul?"
I meet often with industry leaders, and Im hearing them echo the sentiments of your editorial. These same leaders are also concerned about finding and attracting qualified underwriting talent. This need has rekindled interest in the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter designation.
Too often, however, employers are unaware that CPCU also requires several years of demonstrable experience and a commitment to abide by a rigorous and enforceable code of ethics, in addition to the education requirement.
This winning combination–education, experience and ethics–has been the definition of a professional for centuries, and it is professionalism that American business needs more than anything these days.
