Forty-nine-year-old Richard Agatstein and 48-year-old Joan E. Kapfer were both appointed senior vice president at W. R. Berkleys Berkley Capital Underwriters, a specialty reinsurance underwriting management company.

In March, we reported that Dennis B. Reding was named CEO of Combined Specialty Corporation. Since then, hes been busy. Steven J. Bensingerwhom Reding described as a valuable asset to our company, has been named the companys CFO. Gregory Gregg Springer was named chief underwriting officer; among his duties will be developing the companys strategy and plans for potential opportunities in the alternative risk and large account P&C business. Finally, Richard Gieryn, whom Reding called a tremendous asset to our team, was named the companys general counsel. All three men will report directly to Reding.

Mores been going on at Combined Specialty: Deems Davis was named CIO; Bobby Jann was named chief administrative officer; and Rob Mancuso was named corporate communications officer.

Two EVPs resigned from American Re: Robert K. Burgess, the companys executive vice president, general counsel, and secretary (to pursue other interests); and Mahmoud Abdallah, executive vice president of American Re Corporation and president of international operations of its principal subsidiary, American Re-Insurance Company (in order to pursue a new venture).

Consecos chief financial officer, Chuck Chokel, is leaving to pursue other interests after about a year with the company. We appreciate Chucks work and wish him well, said company chairman and CEO Gary Wendt.

AIG named John Doyle president of American Home Assurance Company, the companys principal domestic provider of commercial umbrella/excess liability and primary and excess workers compensation insurance.

New York Life Insurance Company named Patricia Spencer Favreau chief marketing officer for the companys life and annuity operations, its largest business unit. Shell be responsible for product marketing and strategy, marketing and communications services, and business development efforts. Favreau lives in New York City with her husband, Marc.

PacifiCare Health Systems (PCHS) promoted 49-year-old Kathy Feeny to executive vice president in charge of Secure Horizons Senior Solutions, a new PacifiCare division that will offer health, financial, and lifestyle services for todays mature population. In addition, James A. Frey was been named president and chief executive officer of PCHSs California health plan. He replaces Chris Wing, who resigned to pursue other interests. Technology Decisions has learned that he will report to Brad Bowlus, executive vice president of the company and CEO of PacifiCare Health Plans.

Louis A. Gardner joined New York Life Insurance Company as a vice president in the companys Leawood, Kans.-based brokerage department. Hell be responsible for retail sales.

Selective Insurance Groupthe largest fulltime employer in Sussex County, [N.J.]appointed Kerry A. Guthrie to vice president and senior investment officer, where hell have oversight responsibility for the companys investment activities. In addition, Gretchen Coffill Narvarte was named assistant vice president of the accounts department, and Leonard V. Weinman became director of managed care services.

Zurich North America named William C. Harris director of distribution strategy for its middle markets business unit. Hell be based in Zurichs Parsippany, N.J. office.

Jonathan Jaramillo has been named senior vice president of New York Lifes Agency Departments Northeastern Agencies. Jaramillo does plenty outside the office, too: He participates in the Illinois Cancer Support Centers Circle of Friends group, in the St. Neumann Church of St. Charles, Ill., and is a coordinator at the local March of Dimes chapter. According to the company, he enjoys golfing, reading, and spending quality time with his familyhis wife, Teresa, and their four children: Breanne, Kathleen, Shanon, and Valerie.

Prudential Securities promoted Edward F. Ed Keon Jr. to what we think is one of the coolest titles weve heard in a while: chief quantitative equity strategist. Keon will work closely with Prudential Securities new chief investment strategist, Ed Yardeni, who came home in April (see Up, Up, and Away, April TD). According to the companys director of global equity research, Steve Buell, Ed Keons unique fusion of quantitative research with equity strategy has helped clients navigate the turbulent markets of the past year.

The Principal Financial Group elected Richard L. Keyser to its board of directors. But thats not all: Jim McCaughan will join the company as executive vice president and global head of asset management. And as soon as Dennis Francis, the current president and CEO of Principal Capital Management, retires, McCaughan will assume that role. Theres more: Julia Lawler has been promoted to senior vice president and chief investment officer of Principal Life Insurance Company.

Allianz Life promoted Gabrielle M. Gabby Matzdorff to senior vice president and chief financial officer. She succeeds Mark Zesbaugh, who was recently named chief executive officer of Allianz Life. According to Zesbaugh, Gabby is highly respected for her talent, and she brings the right combination of leadership, technical expertise and industry knowledge to lead the overall financial operations of Allianz Life.

John McCartney was named chief financial officer of Zurich North America. McCartney, who CEO John Amore described as eminently qualified for the position of CFO, served as CEO of Empire Fire and Marine, a business unit of the company. McCartney succeeds Thomas Buess, who was named CFO of Zurich Financial Services Group, the parent organization of Zurich North America, in December 2001. Steve Rand will succeed McCartney at Empire.

ProAssurance Corporation elected John J. McMahon, Jr. and Drayton Nabers, Jr.both widely recognized as corporate and civic leadersto the companys board of directors. Company chairman A. Derrill Crowe ProAssurance expect[s] to lean heavily on their experience and insight as we develop our business plans and evaluate future opportunities.

NCCI Holdings appointed Dennis C. Mealy chief actuary.

ACE INA Holdings appointed Susan Rivera president; she had been president of American Home Assurance Company. ACE also promoted Brian Dowd to president of ACE Westchester Specialty.

Gil C. Rohde, Jr., was appointed president and CEO of Security American Financial Enterprises and Security Life Insurance Company of America. He replaces interim CEO J. Stephen Beckman, who was elected chairman of the board, succeeding Orem O. Robbins. Robbins, who founded the company, was named chairman emeritus.

State Automobile Mutual Insurance Companys board of directors elected David Russell assistant vice president.

Hibernia has named 20-year insurance industry veteran Steven Terry as president of Hibernia Rosenthal Insurance, the companys insurance division. Terry will replace Leslie Jacobs, who will remain with the company through the end of 2002. I look forward to moving to New Orleans and helping to grow Hibernias insurance business, Terry said.

For the first time, Lincoln National Corporation elected Glenn F. Tilton to its board of directors.

Minnesota Life promoted Karen Worke to program manager, where she will be responsible for managing the client relationship program for the companys loan-protection-product business unit. Worke lives in Eagan, Minn.
