Hurricane Box Score: 4 For U.S.

NU Online News Service, Dec. 5, 11:44 a.m. EST?The Atlantic Hurricane season, which just ended, had double the normal amount of hurricane activity for the period, a weather consulting firm said in its recap of storm activity for the year.

Compu-Weather of Hopewell Junction, N.Y., noted that there were 12 named storms. Eight of those storms reached U.S. soil, which the company said is twice the average amount for a season.

Four of those eight were hurricanes.

Total damage in the United States from all storms this season amounted to about $900 million, according to Compu-Weather.

The company said Louisiana was the hardest hit state, after being clouted by four storms, including powerful Hurricane Lili and Tropical Storm Isidore.

Lili, which weakened from a 140 mph Category 4 to a 100 mph Category 2 storm just before making landfall, was the first hurricane to hit the United States since 1999, the firm noted.
