Chubb Agency Twice A Winner
NU Online News Service, Dec. 2, 11:55 a.m. EST?Chubb Group of Insurance Companies, sponsor of the third annual Chubb Charity Challenge, announced that Higginbotham & Associates, based in Fort Worth, Texas, was the winner of this year's national tournament. The agency was also the recipient of The National Underwriter's inaugural "Agency of the Year" award in September.
The Warren, N.J.-based Chubb said the event raised a total of $574,500 for charity.
Higginbotham donated its $50,000 prize to Happy Hills Farm Academy Home, of Granbury, Texas.
Finishing second was Insurance Alliance, of Houston, which donated its $35,000 prize to Camp For All, of Houston. Rounding out third was Schiff, Kreidler-Shell of Cincinnati, donating its $30,000 prize to Ohio Valley Oral School, of Montgomery, Ohio.
Golf teams representing 45 insurance agencies from across the U.S. and Canada competed in the two day event on Nov. 11 and 12 at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort in Tucson, Az.
The proceeds were divided among charitable organizations chosen by the teams and based on their place in the competition.
Chubb said the national tournament followed 40 regional tournaments played between May and October that involved 1,532 golfers.
"We're pleased that so many of our agents and customers volunteered their time and money for these worthy charities," said Terry Cavanaugh, managing director and senior vice president of Chubb & Son. "Participation in the Chubb Charity Challenge continues to grow each year, and we're happy to be part of an event that gives back to communities that Chubb serves."
The prize money was raised based on each team paying $1,500 to enter a regional tournament. Of that amount, $237,000 was awarded to the charities chosen by the winning teams in the qualifying rounds.
The remaining $337,500 was divided among charities selected by teams that played at the finals in Tucson. An additional $20,000 was raised this year through the auction of golf memorabilia at the awards dinner in Tucson.
Last year, the tournament raised $475,000 through 38 regional tournaments. In 2000, the tournament raised $350,000 through 35 regional tournaments.
Chubb said it organized the tournaments and paid for the players' airfare, hotel accommodations and ground transportation to the national event.
