CDC Offers Smallpox Preparedness Broadcast

NU Online News Service, Dec. 2, 2:30 p.m. EST?The Center for Disease Control and Prevention announced it is sponsoring a two-day smallpox preparedness satellite broadcast and Webcast on Dec. 5-6.

The Broadcast schedules are: Part one, Dec. 5, 12:30-5:30 p.m. EST; and part two, Dec. 6, 12:30-5:30 p.m. EST.

According to the Atlanta, Ga.-based CDC, implementation of a vaccination plan for smallpox preparedness and response will require a variety of people in state and local health departments, hospitals, and other healthcare settings to receive general education and training on smallpox and smallpox vaccine issues.

The broadcast will supply detailed information needed by some personnel, such as smallpox vaccine clinicians, who may evaluate and treat adverse events, according to the CDC.

Hospital administrators, public risk managers, healthcare risk managers and hospital-based clinicians will need information to make informed decisions about program participation and possible vaccination sequels.

Also in need of basic clinical information, according to the CDC, are primary care physicians. Information will include evaluation of patients with a rash or suspected smallpox, screening issues for potential vaccinees who may seek advice, and management and referral of adverse reactions following a vaccination.

Training component modules will be presented in two-day distance learning satellite videoconferences on Dec. 5-6. Modules of the two-day program will be available in a variety of formats including videotape, CD-ROM, through the CDC Web site, and through print materials, the CDC said.

The Public Health Foundation will distribute videos, CDs and selected print materials free of charge shortly after the program broadcast, according to the CDC.
