Insurers Ready For Web Services
NU Online News Service, Sept. 24, 11:59 a.m. EST?Insurance companies are uniquely positioned to take advantage of Web services as part of their efforts to enhance "e-strategies," says a study from the Needham, Mass.-based TowerGroup.
According to the researchers, the use of Web services within the financial services industry has received a lot of attention recently, but it should not be regarded as another Web fad, or an attempt by vendors to repackage existing technology.
Web services, said the study, "Web Services: Delivering the Next Phase of e-Enabled Insurance," is an emerging information technology mechanism that can provide the communications standards and reusable tools needed to create connections between information system platforms.
"This technology helps by providing standardized components for connecting the diverse elements of the distributed computing environment typical of many insurance data centers," the study noted.
The study explores the benefits of using Web services in the insurance industry and how insurance carriers can move toward an e-enablement strategy, said a spokesperson for the research organization.
Also included in the study is an examination of the standards and organizations behind the mechanisms driving Web services technology. It cites examples of how insurers can effectively deploy Web services technology.
