Hartford Offers Free Cyber-Risk Course
NU Online News Service, Aug. 21, 4:05 p.m. EST?The Hartford Financial Services Group announced it will offer a free online course to insurance agents to help them identify and protect their clients from cyber risks.
"As a major distribution force, independent agents can play a critical role in educating business clients about their Internet and other technology or network-related risks," said Tom Hartzell, director of the commercial eLearning team for The Hartford. "This is a new and evolving area of exposure, so it's important to provide agents and brokers with the information they need to properly advise their customers."
The course, which defines e-business risk broadly as any process a business organization conducts using technology, helps identify and address some key coverage questions that have emerged as a result of the surge in Internet usage, the company said. It also discusses many of the most common e-business exposures.
Upon completion of the course, The Hartford said, participants should be able to:
? Comprehend some of the impacts of the Internet on commercial insurance exposures.
? Identify where traditional p-c forms fall short in addressing clients' e-business coverage needs.
? Recognize some common e-business exposures.
? Suggest risk management procedures clients can implement to control their e-business exposures.
"In focus groups we have learned that many business owners are resistant to purchasing insurance that would protect against cyber risks because they don't understand their vulnerability," Mr. Hartzell said. "To serve the best interests of their clients, it's important that agents truly understand this subject and can explain it adequately."
The course is available online and at no cost to any agent, the company noted. It can be accessed at The Hartford's agent education Web site, www.hsie-campus.com.
