Kansas Logs $24 Million In Crop Claims

NU Online News Service, June 25, 2:56 p.m. EST?Drought has led about 2,800 Kansas farmers to file insurance claims this year for crop damage amounting to $24 million, according to Compu-Weather, a meteorological consulting firm in Hopewell Junction, N.Y.

Compu-Weather said the dollar figure for claims will go considerably higher once the backlog of claims is completed.

The weather group said that conditions in some parts of the state are worse than the 1930′s Dust Bowl days.

Compu-Weather also noted that a hailstorm two weekends back caused an estimated $6 million in damages to the wheat crop.

An estimated 70 percent of the wheat crop will be lost due to the lack of rain and other weather-related factors. Cattle farmers are being forced to liquidate entire herds as they have run out of grassland for the cows to feed on, Compu-Weather said.
