NU Online news Service, May 17, 10:45 a.m. EST?The Risk and Insurance Management Society Inc. announced its annual legislative conference, RIMS on the Hill, is scheduled for June 5-6, in Washington, D.C.
New York-based RIMS said its members will be able to take part in a grassroots congressional lobbying campaign on the issues of terrorism reinsurance, class-action lawsuit reform and an optional federal insurance charter.
Attendees at the June 5 sessions will hear several panels of professional lobbyists and congressional staff discuss how these issues affect risk managers. Conference attendees will meet with congressional legislators and staff June 6.
"RIMS has been extremely active in Washington over the past year, moving aggressively on terrorism legislation among other important issues," said Christopher Mandel, RIMS president. "I am confident that this year's RIMS on the Hill will be highly beneficial to our membership and to the risk management community."
Larry Mirel, District of Columbia commissioner of Insurance and Securities Regulation, will address the conference at the opening luncheon June 5, and Rep. Ken Bentsen, D-Texas, is the featured afternoon speaker.
Panelists for sessions on RIMS' key topics include Beth Climo, American Bankers Insurance Association; Ike Jones, Democratic counsel to the House Financial Services Committee; and Peter Wallison, American Enterprise Institute.
Other sessions will take up class-action lawsuit reform, what attendees should expect from their Capitol Hill visits and how to lobby effectively, as well as a terrorism insurance legislative update. More information is available at the RIMS Web site http://www.rims.org
