Insurer Office Seekers Go To School

NU Online News Service, March 6, 2:20 p.m. EST?Insurance professionals from around the country, seeking elective office, spent some time recently being schooled in the art of campaigning at the nation's capital.
The Alexandria, Va.-based Independent Insurance Agents of America and Future One, a coalition of 26 insurance companies working with the agent association, sponsored a two-day workshop last week in Washington, D.C. for 25 candidates.
The third biennial Insurance Campaign Institute, held at the Westin Fairfax Hotel, Feb. 21 and 22, focused on equipping insurance professionals with the knowledge to run a successful campaign for political office, said Robert A. Rusbuldt, IIAA's chief executive officer.
The attendees learned valuable campaign tips from political professionals, campaign managers, fundraisers and media experts who gave lectures during the sessions. Other topics covered were volunteer organization and grassroots campaigning; direct mail strategies; campaign research; campaigns and the Internet; message delivery and communicating with voters; paid media and campaign advertising; and public events.
Several participants of the very first campaign institute session, held in 1998, won election, IIAA said. The winners included a candidate to Florida's House of Representatives and a candidate for the local school board in Fredericksburg, Va. Similar success was experienced by attendees of the second Institute held in 2000, the association said.
