Holocaust Claim Filing Deadline Change
NU Online News Service, Feb. 5, 1:31 p.m. EST?The International Commission on Holocaust-Era Insurance Claims has extended the deadline for Holocaust survivors and their families to file death claims against insurers.
The original deadline of Feb. 15 has been moved to Sept. 30 to give potential claimants more time to file appropriate paperwork with the commission regarding their claims.
California Insurance Commissioner Harry W. Low said the decision was made to give claimants more time to file appropriate paperwork with the commission.
"Holocaust victims and their families with World War II era claims deserve every opportunity to seek satisfaction for their claims," Mr. Low said.
The extended timeline offers insurance companies an opportunity to fulfill commitments to Holocaust claimants who have insurance coverage, the California Insurance Department said.
According to the department, five companies–Allianz, Axa, Generali, Winterthur, and Zurich–have agreed to join the commission and be bound by their standards.
Commission standards require Holocaust policyholders or their descendants to only present insurers with a name, date of birth, and place of birth for the companies to investigate and pay unpaid Holocaust-era insurance policies.
