As the seasons change, so do the types of claims adjusters see. Falling leaves create a skidding hazard for unwary drivers. Running deer and other wildlife rarely bother to look both ways before they cross a road. And drivers in a hurry may decide to rush off before their windshields and rear windows are fully defrosted, providing a partially obstructed view of anyone else on the road.

Farmers Insurance offers drivers and homeowners safety tips in their Seasonal Smarts Digest, which has recommendations for each season. Other fall hazards include rear-end crashes, auto thefts, and weather-related auto and property issues.

Claims professionals and agents can help educate policyholders on seasonal risks when they are involved in an existing claim. "The claims process is a time when adjusters have a great deal of one-on-one exposure to the customer," explains Paul Quinn, head of claims customer service for Farmers.
