Despite most people having good opinions of their own driving abilities, over three-quarters admit to behaviors that are outright dangerous, according to a study by Compare the Market.

The majority of auto accidents are caused by human error, the data showed, with speeding, drunk driving, driving while fatigued or intoxicated and not wearing a seatbelt all classified as human error. At the same time, distracted driving like using a phone behind the wheel could also increase the likelihood of a crash. Data compiled by the World Health Organization shows drivers using mobile phones are four times more likely to be in a car crash.

“When it comes to car insurance, there’s a difference between ‘being at fault’ for an honest accident, and illegal, reckless driving or activities, and this could include using your phone in your hand to text and message people,” said Adrian Taylor, executive general manager at Compare the Market AU.

“Using your phone for hands-free navigation or phone calls is ok, but it’s imperative that drivers avoid any illegal use of the phone,” he added. “It’s distracting and dangerous, and could leave you footing the bill yourself if your insurer refuses to pay because you knowingly did the wrong thing.”

Meanwhile, the average cost for full auto coverage in the U.S. is roughly $2,894 per year, or $241 per month. Common factors impacting the cost of coverage include driving history, credit history, location, age and gender.
