Internet connectivity issues like freezing screens, lagging audio and calls cutting short are the top workforce challenge for a third of all IT leaders, according to a study by Lightyear.

The daily productivity of hybrid and remote workers depends on seamless digital collaboration, the data showed, as 40% describe themselves as “extremely frustrated” by the issues and 36% saying the unreliable connections make them feel more anxious and disengaged.

“It’s the most familiar interruption of the modern workday: the frozen screen, the robotic echo, or the colleague gesturing wildly while stuck on mute,” Lightyear said in the report. “These technical frustrations, it turns out, aren't just an occasional annoyance; they are the weekly norm.”

“Interestingly enough, 64% say the primary connection during disrupted meetings is corporate wifi, not personal devices, suggesting that office infrastructure might be the weak point,” Lightyear said. “If the average employee loses three minutes per meeting, and the typical worker attends eight meetings per week, that’s over 20 minutes of lost time weekly per employee, or nearly 17 hours a year. Across a 500-person company, that’s the equivalent of 10,000+ hours lost annually.”
