With millions of drivers hitting the road for the Labor Day holiday, new insights from Allstate show when and where conditions are riskiest on the roads.
The data comes from Allstate’s Drivewise app and analyzes driving behavior trends from the Wednesday before Labor Day to the Tuesday after.
“We see driving habits really change over Labor Day weekend,” said Brian Dieringer, president of Allstate Roadside, in a statement. “You’ve got fewer drivers slamming on the brakes and more stepping on the gas, which is a clear sign people are trading the daily commute for a road trip.”
Allstate’s data projects that the cities that will see the biggest increases in out-of-state drivers this weekend are Nashville, Colorado Springs, Las Vegas, Austin and San Antonio.
Major slowdowns are expected on Atlanta’s I-85, I-75 and I-20; Houston’s I-10 and I-45; Chicago’s I-90 and I-94; Philadelphia’s I-95; and U.S. 75 in Dallas.
Morning hours, between 7 and 11 a.m., on Saturday, Sunday and Monday will be the best times to travel. The worst times to travel will be afternoons, between 3 and 7 p.m.
The worst cities for roadside issues and vehicle breakdowns during Labor Day travel are Houston, Atlanta and Chicago. Many drivers could also see problems once they return home. Allstate says breakdowns spike 25% on the Tuesday after Labor Day.
“Allstate Roadside sees a surge in calls the day after Labor Day,” Dieringer said. “It’s partly due to increased wear from holiday travel, but also from the fact that many repair shops are closed over the holiday weekend and the rush to get back to normal routines.
