According to a new survey sponsored by CarInsurance.com, drivers get behind the wheel when they shouldn't in a wide range of situations, including not wearing their glasses and having one too many drinks.
But the number-one risk factor is one that we've all probably done at some point in our driving lives.
Of the 2,000 drivers surveyed by CarInsurance.com, 68% admitted to driving when they were tired or sleepy. And, while that may not seem as risky as drinking and driving, according to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, drowsy drivers are involved in one out of every eight fatal car crashes in the U.S., totaling some 100,000 crashes per year, injuring 71,000 people and leaving 1,500 dead.
The number-two risk factor among drivers was driving with a headache (53%), followed by driving while sick (35%) and being “less drunk than a friend” (23%).
