James M. Craig, president of the American Institute of Marine Underwriters for the last 10 years, will retire at the end of 2013.

Craig is credited with expanding the AIMU's education and training initiatives and creating and implementing new courses—including distance-learning and fieldtrips.

"Jim's leadership in developing innovative and enriching educational programs has left a legacy of superbly-trained marine insurance professionals with unsurpassed skills and knowledge," says Roger F. Ablett, chairman of AIMU, who is also practice leader at Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty. "Jim also has effectively represented the interests of U.S. ocean marine underwriters before a variety of important international and domestic forums."

Craig has been an AIMU member since 1993 following a career in underwriting, marketing, sales and administration with companies like Safeco, Reliance, Merchants Mutual and the John Conklin Agency.

He served as AIMU's liaison to marine organizations such as the International Union of Marine Insurance, Association of Average Adjusters of the United States and Canada, Marine Insurance Claims Association, Maritime Law Association, National Cargo Bureau and the American Bureau of Shipping.  He has testified before a U.S. Senate sub-committee in support of a bill strengthening port and maritime security.

AIMU, which represents the U.S. ocean-marine insurance market, is searching for Craig's successor.
