Montpelier Re Holdings Ltd. says its Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Chairman Tom Busher will retire at the end of this year.

A member of the original management team that founded Montpelier in late 2001, Busher has been COO since its inception. He became a member of the board in 2007 and was named deputy chairman in 2008.

During his time with the company Busher has been closely associated with many key initiatives, including Montpelier's IPO on the New York Stock Exchange in 2002, the founding of Syndicate 5151 (which underwrites a diverse book of property engineering specialty and marine classes sourced from the London, U.S. and European markets) at Lloyd's in 2007, and the recent initial public offering of Blue Capital Global Reinsurance Fund Ltd. on the London and Bermuda Stock Exchanges in 2012.

The Hamilton, Bermuda-based carrier says Busher will step down from the board in May before retiring as COO on Dec. 31.

He will continue to serve as chairman of Montpelier Underwriting Agencies Ltd.
