John Phelps, director of Business Risk Solutions for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida, Inc., will serve as the president of the Risk and Insurance Management Society (RIMS) in 2013.

"For far too long, the mention of 'risk' has struck fear in board rooms around the world," says Phelps, who began his term on January 1.

"As president of RIMS I want to focus on the resources and services that will better equip our members to demonstrate how a more comprehensive understanding of risk can help straighten the path for an organization's success and exploit the opportunities risk offers every company. I sincerely look forward to the year ahead and to helping our members advance their organization's risk management capabilities in all business disciplines."

Phelps has been a RIMS member for more than three decades and sat on its board for nine years. Previously, he was vice president and board liaison to the RIMS External Affairs Committee and its Canada Council. He was also president of the RIMS Northeast Florida Chapter in 1997, of which he is still a current member.

Joining RIMS' board in 2013 are Gordon Adams, chief risk officer (CRO) at Tri-Marine International, Inc.; and Grace M. Crickette, CRO of the University of California.
