Allocating the time and expense to attend an education conference has become a bottom-line focused decision. I am old enough to remember a bygone era when attending a conference like IASA was sometimes viewed as a perk, or reward, after the busy annual statement reporting period or the completion of a major technology installation. That perspective is rare these days, as resources have compressed.

Recognizing this trend, which was clear even before this most recent economic turndown, has been critically important for all IASA stakeholders. Without compromising our collegial and social culture, IASA has taken a business-like approach to quality- and value-driven, focused improvements to the IASA Annual Conference. Educational content upgrades, improved networking opportunities and high-value registration fee pricing have yielded continued strong attendance and record-setting, exhibiting and sponsorship support. So it's clear the result of our efforts has been a win-win for conference attendees and IASA alike.

We want each and every conference attendee to leverage everything IASA 2012 has to offer. Here are three simple reminders to help ensure you leaveSan Diegowith a solid ROI:

Get the most out of the education program. Our diligent volunteer committees have constructed an outstanding educational program with diverse content and a knowledgeable faculty of speakers. The diversity and quality of the program is always well worth the price of admission. That said, the excellent program does not guarantee that each attendee will get the targeted information most important to them. So, I want to encourage each person to go the extra mile and prepare for each session they will be attending by focusing on the aspects of each topic most important to them and their company. Most sessions provide for interaction with the speakers and participants. Get answers, or at least get ideas related to your most pressing issues.

Network, network, network. The ability to learn, and, find workable takeaways from the conference starts with the formal education program, but it continues throughout the event with unlimited value that can be derived by meeting other industry professionals. IASA has continued to make connecting with the right person easier. Leverage our new conference app, detailed conference directory, expansive business show and social networking tools so you find the people who are most helpful to you and your organization. It is amazing how important it is to just be friendly. You never know if that person in front of you in the food line, across from you at breakfast or the solution provider you are passing in the exhibit hall is the most valued resource you might meet over the entire time you are inSan Diego. I am always amazed at how open and helpful peer professionals between different organizations are with one another. Professional to professional, there is a bond that can transcend corporate structures.

Keep the value proposition alive after you depart. Even the most engaged conference attendee is still going to leaveSan Diego with some lingering questions and challenges. Stay engaged with IASA throughout the year. Connect with our social networking platforms, join our webinars and participate in our monthly Industry Pulse polls. And don't forget about the more than 30 chapter events we conduct throughout the country each year, which help to reinforce business relationships and provide targeted education focused on your region.
