Alterra Capital Holdings appointed Adam Mullan to be chief executive officer of global reinsurance and Thomas C. Wafer as chairman of global reinsurance. Mullan also will continue in his role as chief executive officer of Alterra at Lloyd's. Additional Alterra promotions include:

  • Jed Rhoads  to president and chief underwriting officer of Bermuda reinsurance
  • David Kalainoff  to president and chief underwriting officer of U.S. reinsurance
  • Matthew Petzold  to underwriting director of Alterra at Lloyd's
  • Trevor Carvey to chief underwriting officer, reinsurance of Alterra Europe
  • Carlos Caputo to chief executive officer of Alterra Latin America
  • Sonia Galvis  to chief underwriting officer of Alterra Latin America.

Selective Insurance Group elected Annabelle Bexiga to its board of directors at Selective's annual meeting of shareholders. Bexiga is chief information officer at TIAA-CREF. She is responsible for technology strategy, architecture, initiatives and solutions.

Endurance Specialty Holdings named Nicholas Campbell executive vice president, chief risk officer. He will manage companywide enterprise risk management activities. Prior, Campbell worked for 3 years at Endurance as senior vice president and head of specialty treaty reinsurance in Bermuda. Endurance Specialty Holdings hired Michael Warwicker  as head of insurance operations and Judy Hart  as vice chairperson of health insurance. The latter is subject to approval by the Bermuda Dept. of Immigration.

Beecher Carlson appointed David Scharlach  senior vice president, risk control. He will provide risk assessment and control, strategic planning, and management of long-term projects. Prior, Scharlach was senior vice president of risk control at Willis.

The American Assn. of Insurance Services (AAIS) named Edmund J. Kelly  president at the 2012 AAIS Main Event executive conference. Kelly will replace Paul Baiocchi after a transition period. Prior, Kelly worked with a number of P&C providers, namely Paris Re America Insurance, ICAT Holdings and Royal Sun Alliance. Also at the event, 8 board members were elected or re-elected. NAS Insurance Services hired Matt Singerman as chief financial officer, Jeremy Barnett as senior vice president of marketing, Desiree Khoury as specialty reinsurance manager, Connie Rivas as claims and contracts manager and Michelle Totanes as human resources and administration manager.

W. R. Berkley Corp. appointed Scott Mansolillo to vice president, chief compliance officer. He will provide technical advice on a consultative basis to operating units. Prior, he was vice president and chief compliance officer, commercial markets of a different major insurance company (read PC360's recent article on W. R. Berkley).

PMA Management Corp. named Hunter Wells senior account executive for Tennessee and Kentucky. He will oversee marketing and sales of TPA and risk services throughout his region. Wells has 16 years of industry experience.

The Navigators Group hired Steven R. Kuuskvere as northeast regional vice president. He will lead his area's insurance operations. Prior, Kuuskvere was senior vice president at Navigators Pro.

Fireman's Fund Insurance appointed Lee Roth to the position high net worth personal insurance executive. She will oversee underwriting and distribution for all personal lines business, focusing on the specialized needs of the high net worth market. Prior, Roth worked as head of the private client group for North America at Chartis Insurance (read PC360's latest article about Fireman's Fund).

Allied World Reinsurance Co., a part of Allied World Assurance Co. Holdings, opened a new office in Miami. This office will serve to better expand the company's presence in Latin America. Allied World also appointed William Turkel to senior vice president and general manager of Latin America and the Caribbean. Prior, Turkel was senior vice president at Platinum Underwriters Bermuda.

Mergers & Acquisitions

Tower Group Cos. announced its commitment to invest $75 million in Canopius Group in Guernsey, Channel Islands. The investment is subject to completion of the acquisition by Canopius of Omega Insurance Holdings, an international insurance and reinsurance group listed on the London Stock Exchange and domiciled in Bermuda. Canopius recently publicly announced an offer to acquire Omega.

Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co. merged with Harleysville Mutual Insurance Co. and Harleysville Group. Nationwide Mutual acquired all of the publicly held shares of common stock of Harleysville Group for $60 per share in cash. Harleysville Mutual policyholders are now policyholders and members of Nationwide Mutual. Harleysville is now a part of Nationwide's P&C independent agency business unit under the Harleysville brand. Harleysville will keep its current headquarters in Harleysville, Pa., (read PC360's full article on the Harleysville/Nationwide merger).

Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. acquired Schiff, Kreidler-Shell Insurance and Risk Services. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. The Schiff, Kreidler-Shell staff will continue to operate from their Cincinnati and Edgewood, Ky., locations as Gallagher SKS, under the direction of Thomas J. Gallagher (read PC360's coverage of AJG's prior acquisition).

New Programs

Argo Insurance, a member of Argo Group International Holdings, introduced its private and pleasure watercraft program through its commercial programs unit in partnership with Osprey Special Risks, a global maritime insurance underwriting agent. The program will first launch in Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin. It will offer P&I and hull coverage.

ACE USA, a division of ACE Group, announced its enhanced Directors & Officers Liability Policy. The new feature is a non-mandatory panel counsel option, introduced in an effort to help policyholders mitigate and manage the rising expense of securities litigation. The ACE Preferred Securities Panel consists of nationally-recognized law firms chosen to share their experience and knowledge in handling securities litigation across many jurisdictions and industries.

InVEST raised more than $65,000 for InVEST student scholarships through the help of corporate and private donations, namely YAC Gives Back, Live Auction conducted during the Large Agency & Broker dinner, Silent Auction and NetVU. This is $4,000 more than InVEST's initial goal.
