Key to the success of Kennametal Inc.'s award-winning workers' compensation program: securing the buy-in of upper management.

How is this achieved?

“By implementing a series of workers' comp training programs, where I have been to every location in the U.S. to educate [employees] about the program, the administration and the claims process,” says Michael P. Murphy, Kennametal's manager of global property and casualty insurance.

It makes a big impact when he shows employees “that we are a high-deductible program: It's not insurance money; it's our money.”

He also shows each facility how its own program can be improved and provides tools for each particular location that will improve the programs.

It also helps that the company's top brass gets involved with the program.

For example, Kennametal senior leaders visit facilities to hand out awards for safety management and for going a significant amount of time without injuries.
