North Dakota Rep. George Keiser has applied for a spot on the Federal Advisory Committee on Insurance, says the National Conference of Insurance Legislators (NCOIL).
The Treasury Department in May announced the formation of the committee, which will give advice to the Federal Insurance Office (FIO) formed by the Dodd-Frank financial services law.
Keiser, R-Bismark, is NCOIL's president and has been active with the organization for 12 years. In his application letter, Keiser says he has 18 years of experience in the North Dakota House of Representatives, with many years as chairman of the insurance committee.
He is now chairman of the legislature's interim health care committee, as North Dakota looks to establish a health insurance exchange. He also chairs the House Industry, Business & Labor Committee.
"My experience and ongoing coordination with a variety of public and private-sector stakeholders—including Members of Congress, governors, attorneys general, state, and international insurance regulators and parliamentarians, as well as consumer and industry representatives—would complement the Committee's expertise and enhance its balance," Keiser application letter reads.
There will be 15 members of the advisory council who will serve two-year terms. The FIO and Treasury will select members.
In a statement Rep. Robert Damron of Kentucky and Sen. James Seward of New York, the immediate past and past presidents of NCOIL, supported Keiser's application. The North Dakotan would not only provide valuable experience to the advisory committee, he would also "serve as a direct link to the larger legislative community," says Seward.
