The California hotel workers union is promoting a S.B. 432, a bill that would require all state hotels to use flat sheets instead of fitted, maintaining that the heavy lifting required for fitted sheets is causing back injuries for workers. The California Hotel and Lodging Assn., however, argues that the regulation could cost taxpayers in the cash-strapped state $30 million to $50 million. Hotel operators also say flat sheets need to be replaced more often and require new laundering equipment to wash effectively.
