For the first time in the history of the insurance industry, the vision of real-time processing is becoming a reality for producers, who now can reach new customers more quickly and better service existing ones. This technology also benefits state regulators, who are more equipped to keep the industry in check and consumers protected.
While this type of transaction timing has become common in the consumer world, the insurance licensing industry, with unique regulatory requirements, previously involved a longer transaction approval period. However, with this technological advancement, both producers and regulators can spend more time taking care of consumers than doing paperwork while saving money on back-end administrative costs.
Reflecting market demand, the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR), which serves as the central digital hub for insurance companies and state regulators, continues to invest in and implement modernized technological infrastructure to better support a growing licensing community under expanding regulatory oversight.
We take our role very seriously. Businesses need to handle regulatory requirements quickly, and regulators rely on us to manage that information. Our goal is to continue providing the right suite of tools that will allow NIPR to respond to everyone we serve in real time so that they can keep doing their job and helping consumers.
The impact of technology
What used to take several days by mail or fax is now completed within a day–and sometimes in minutes. For example, every time an insurance producer needs a license to operate in a new state, the NIPR's central hub handles the request electronically so the producer can receive the license right away without having to wait days for the transaction to clear. This allows new agents or expanding businesses to take care of their regulatory requirements quickly without losing crucial time in the field.
As the industry grows with new agents and sales in more jurisdictions, regulators are also faced with more work having to monitor insurance and its new entrants. With the move to digital tools, state regulators can take an accurate pulse of the insurance activity in their jurisdictions, which ultimately helps them keep consumers protected.
The technological infrastructure also allows NIPR to issue alerts that inform a subscribing insurance carrier about data modifications, such as a change in the status of a resident or non-resident license. NIPR recently expanded the alert capabilities to notify those in the network when a producer has a regulatory action so they can determine if there is a need for further action.
Understanding that technology moves at the speed of light, NIPR has also ensured that this technology can be adapted and evolved to meet changing partner needs. For example, NIPR's technology works with each current state system to process requests and monetary exchanges. But as more states develop individual systems, NIPR has built in the ability to implement real-time updates and functions as more jurisdictions are added to the network.
Meeting producer needs
We know producers and regulators are demanding better technology to handle these back-end requirements, and we've seen the growth in usage of our tools, having recently processed our millionth transaction through our licensing and renewals tool. Our next step is to build upon systems in place and provide real-time transactions to more and more jurisdictions using our tools.
As the market continues to shift and evolve, it will become crucial for all groups within the licensing community to work together to strengthen the industry's digital presence and add the right capabilities to better serve their key stakeholders.
