John K. Latham, president of Markel, received the Charles A. McAlear NAPSLO Industry Award for his contributions to the surplus lines industry. Latham received the award during a ceremony at the 2009 NAPSLO Annual Convention in Orlando in early October.

The award was established by NAPSLO in the 1980s to honor individuals who have made significant contributions to the surplus lines industry.

Latham has been active on the board of directors of both NAPSLO and the Derek Hughes/NAPSLO Educational Foundation. Latham served as NAPSLO president in 2000-01 and was an instructor at the NAPSLO E&S School. Since serving as NAPSLO president, Latham served on the Foundation Board in 2008 and was named president of the newly formed Southeast Region of Markel Corp.

Former NAPSLO president, John Wood, presenter of the award said, "Mr. Latham's work with NAPSLO and his leadership in the industry has made a profound mark on the E&S marketplace."
