J. Randolph Babbitt, a partner in the aviation practice of management consulting firm Oliver Wyman, a Marsh & McLennan subsidiary, has been nominated to head the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration.
Mr. Babbitt was one of seven appointments announced late last week by President Obama.
Mr. Babbitt has roughly 40 years of experience in the aviation field and is regarded as an expert in aviation safety and policy and labor relations, his firm said.
His career began as a pilot for Eastern Airlines, flying for more than 25 years. He is a past president and chief executive officer of the Airline Pilots Association. Mr. Babbitt left the Airline Pilots Association to found Eclat Consulting in Reston, Va., which provided economic support for regulatory, legislative and business issues in aviation. The firm was acquired by Oliver Wyman in 2007.
In 1993, Mr. Babbitt served as a presidential appointee on the National Commission to Ensure a Strong Competitive Airline Industry. In 2008, he was named by the Secretary of Transportation to an independent review team of aviation and safety experts tasked with evaluating and crafting recommendations to improve the FAA's implementation of the aviation safety system and its culture of safety.
