Florida Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty has been named Regulator of the Year by the LexisNexis Insurance Law Center.

The selection was made by the Center's Advisory Board which listed him for the Person of the Year Awards for 2008, based on his impact on the industry during 2008.

LexisNexis said the Insurance Law Center is part of its communities, a group of online Web 2.0 hubs designed to bring together legal practitioners in 16 practice areas worldwide to expand their knowledge, interact with colleagues and gain recognition as experts.

The ILC said of its selection of Commissioner McCarty, "Although opinions about whether Kevin McCarty's accomplishments as Insurance Commissioner in the State of Florida may heavily depend on which side of the bar an individual occupies, his impact on the insurance industry–for good or for ill–is undeniable.

"Based upon the large number of comments received from community participants in support of Commissioner McCarty's nomination and the strong support for his candidacy expressed by the regulatory community, the board concludes that Kevin McCarty is the international, federal, state, or local regulator who had most impact during 2008."

Commissioner McCarty joined the Florida Department of Insurance in 1991 and was appointed to his post in January 2003. He began his career in public service in 1988, becoming an expert in workers' compensation issues with the Department of Labor & Employment Security.

Other categories in the Person of the Year Awards for 2008 included:

o Policyholder Attorney of the Year (Robert Horkovich, Anderson Kill, New York; and Roger Simpson, Cotkin & Collins, Los Angeles).

o Insurer Attorney of the Year (Leo J. Jordan, West Orange, N.J.).
