Greenwich, Conn.-based insurance carrier W. R. Berkley Corp. said it has named Douglass E. Pfeifer president of its Riverport Insurance Company subsidiary.

He succeeds Kenneth R. Hopkins, who will remain on Riverport's board of directors and as president of Berkley Risk Administrators Company, LLC.

The appointment is effective immediately, the company said.

Riverport is a provider of property-casualty insurance products and services for human services organizations, governmental and other specialty entities, self-insured companies, associations and purchasing groups.

Mr. Pfeifer joined W. R. Berkley in 1991 and has served as executive vice president of Riverport since 2006. Previously, he was senior vice president of Berkley Risk Administrators Co. He has more than 29 years of insurance industry experience.

William R. Berkley, chairman and chief executive officer, in a statement said the firm is highly confident in Mr. Pfeifer's ability "to assume full responsibility as Riverport continues to expand."
