The Alliance of Insurance Agents & Brokers, a Sacramento, Calif.-based independent agent organization, has named Michael D'Arelli as its new executive director and chief operating officer.

Mr. D'Arelli replaced David G. Nielsen, who retired as executive director and COO of the Alliance.

Prior to joining the Alliance as executive vice president in 2006, Mr. D'Arelli was the vice president of Legislative & Regulatory Affairs at the Western Insurance Agents Association. He has also served as a lobbyist for a variety of corporations, associations and governmental agencies.

"Michael D'Arelli is uniquely qualified to lead this organization," said Debra Jackson, Alliance board president. "Michael has been an agency owner, a financial advisor, a lobbyist and an association executive. He is keenly aware of the issues facing the association members and has the savvy, skill and vision to lead the Alliance well into the future."

Mr. Nielsen said Mr. D'Arelli had been instrumental in expanding the Alliance's core group of member benefits and creating an admitted, members-only errors and omissions program and the Alliance Gateway--a program "providing members with coveted personal and commercial lines markets without the need for a direct appointment."
