Governor M. Jodi Rell vetoed the Connecticut Healthcare Partnership bill.
The legislation, HB 5536, which was passed by the state legislature, would have allowed a number of entities, including municipalities, nonprofits and small businesses with fewer than 50 employees to join the state employee's health insurance pool without involvement of an insurance agent. The movement of clients to the state-run pool would have cut into the bottom line of independent insurance agents, discouraging small business owners from investing in their agencies and expanding.
Governor Rell commended the concept behind the bill, intended to achieve savings for municipalities, nonprofits and small businesses. She advised supporters of HB 5536 to work with her to revise the bill.
