The state of Texas has introduced a technology program that will allow law enforcement officials to instantly identify whether or not a person has valid liability auto insurance.

According to the Texas Department of Insurance, the goal is to reduce the number of uninsured motorists in Texas, which is estimated to be between 15-20 percent of all vehicles on the road. The program was developed by Texas Department of Insurance, the Texas Department of Public Safety, the Texas Department of Transportation, and the Texas Department of Information Resources.

The program will let police officers and other state agencies gain access to insurance information on a specific vehicle or driver.

The new liability insurance verification program is expected to be up and running by early 2008 and the state's liability limits are arranged to be raised next year and will take effect on April 1, 2008.
