The National Association of Insurance Commissioners said its President's Symposium focusing on catastrophe and disaster planning in the United States will be held this month in Miami.

The Kansas City, Mo.-based association said the meeting will take place Jan. 18-19 at the Conrad Miami Hotel.

Walter Bell, NAIC president and Alabama's insurance commissioner, will host the event, titled "Natural Disasters in the U.S.–Preparing, Responding, Recovering."

The symposium is directed toward regulators from state and international insurance departments, as well as government and insurance industry representatives.

Vice Admiral Conrad C. Lautenbacher Jr., undersecretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and administrator for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, will be the keynote speaker.

Panelists will speak on disasters such as hurricanes and earthquakes, how to respond to catastrophes, global warming concerns, and reinsurance issues, NAIC said.

Other topics will include disaster relief, disaster recovery and rebuilding, and proposals for a National Natural Catastrophe Plan.

In addition to classroom sessions, symposium attendees will tour the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

Those wishing to attend must register through the NAIC's Education Department. More information is available by contacting the NAIC Education Department at (816) 783-8200 or online at www.naic.org/documents/education_2007_symposium.pdf.
