NU Online News Service, June 10, 12:25 p.m. EDT?Members of the Risk and Insurance Management Society Inc. are discussing reforms for the civil litigation system today and tomorrow on Capital Hill at the Society's annual legislative summit, RIMS on the Hill.

The briefings today will include Rep. Mark Kirk, R-Ill., the House sponsor of an asbestos litigation bill, and Wayne Abernathy, assistant secretary for financial institutions at the U.S. Treasury Department.

"The summit brings those who are affected daily by these issues together with those who make the laws," said Lance Ewing, president of the New York-based RIMS.

"RIMS members will be sitting in their legislators' offices reinforcing the importance of some key risk management issues."

Congressional staffers, lobbyists and industry executives will brief the conference participants today at the Four Points Sheraton in Washington, D.C.

Topics for the briefings will include asbestos litigation, class-action lawsuit reform and medical malpractice reform.

The sessions will also update RIMS members on the implementation of the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act and the Litigation Risk Retention Act, and are designed to prep RIMS members for a tort reform lobbying effort tomorrow with Congressional legislators and staff.

A full agenda and RIMS' statements of principles on tort reform are available on RIMS Web site, www.rims.org under Government Affairs, Federal Issues.
