Donald K. Gardiner, Retired CEO of PIA National Dies

NU Online News Service, May 19, 11:38 a.m. EDT?Funeral services are scheduled tomorrow for Donald K. Gardiner, retired former executive vice president of the National Association of Professional Insurance Agents, who died Wednesday in Naples, Fla. He was 63.

The National Association of Professional Insurance Agents, based in Alexandria , Va., said Mr. Gardiner had died of a heart attack at the Cleveland Clinic in Naples.

From 1984 to 1994, Mr. Gardiner was the executive vice president and chief executive officer of PIA National. The organization said that during his tenure, he grew the association significantly in size and scope of operation.

From 1971 to 1984, he served as chief executive officer of PIA of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut based in Glenmont, N.Y. For six years prior to assuming this post he was the affiliate's assistant chief executive officer.

He was elected to the board of the American Society of Association Executives in 1991. In 1994 he became ASAE vice chairman before retiring to Naples.

Mr. Gardiner is survived by his wife, Diane; brother, Ron of New Port Richey, Fla.; two daughters, Wendy Biggerstaff of Iron River, Wis., and Pamela Wood of Centreville, Va.; two sons, Chris Gardiner of Clifton Park, N.Y., and Jeff Gardiner of Arlington, Va.; and seven grandchildren.

Visitation hours today are from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Demaine Funeral Home, located at 520 S. Washington Street, Alexandria, Va. Tomorrow's memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Burial is at Ivy Hill Cemetery, 2823 King St., Alexandria, Va.
