IIABA Awards 1st Herndon Scholarship
NU Online News Service, March 7, 1:17 p.m. EST?Kevin B. Hutchinson is the recipient of the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America's first Maurice Herndon scholarship award.
The scholarship was established in memory of Mr. Herndon, who directed the Alexandria, Va.-based association's Washington, D.C. office from 1949 to 1976.
He was known as "Mr. Washington" among independent agents, the association said. The annual scholarship fund was established after his death in January.
The scholarship helps a young agent, the parameters of which are defined by individual state associations, attend the IIABA's National Legislative Conference for the first time.
Mr. Hutchinson is a producer with C. J. Thomas Company in St. Louis. He is the chair-elect of the Missouri Young Agents Committee.
IIABA said he was selected in recognition of his efforts to implement a grassroots educational program in Missouri to teach young agents how they can make a political difference.
Mr. Hutchinson is currently campaigning for elective office, running for alderman in nearby Columbia, Ill., where he lives.
IIABA's 27th Annual National Legislative Conference is scheduled to take place April 2-4 at The Capital Hilton in downtown Washington, D.C.
