Three earthquakes struck Mexico yesterday and early today, but caused little damage because of their remote location, says a catastrophe modeler.
The U.S. Geological Survey says two earthquakes struck off the coast of Baja California in the Bay of California early today while a third struck in southern Mexico yesterday.
The two Baja California earthquakes struck near Santa Isabel, Calif.
The first earthquake, a magnitude 6.2 temblor, struck just after midnight yesterday about 35 miles north-northeast from Santa Isabel and 322 miles south fromPhoenix.
The second quake struck almost ten minutes later, magnitude 6.9, near the first one just off the east coast of theBaja CaliforniaPeninsulain the Bay of California.
The third quake, magnitude 6.5, struckSouthern Mexicoat 3:55 p.m. local time. The epicenter was 248 miles west-southwest from Mexico City.
In a statement, catastrophe modeler RMS says while theBaja Californiaquakes were rated of very strong to strong intensity that could do significant damage, the sparsely populated areas nearest the epicenter did not pose significant insurance exposure.
