American Family Mutual Insurance Company Chief Operating Officer Jack Salzwedel will become the Madison, Wisc.-based insurer’s chairman and chief executive late this year.

The promotion will become effective Nov. 1, according to the company.

Mr. Salzwedel, who began with American Family in 1983 as a health claim adjuster, will succeed Dave Anderson, who is retiring effective Oct. 31 after 36 years with the company.

Mr. Salzwedel has been COO since 2006 and president since January 2007. He is credited with starting a technology transformation and creating customer service options during his time as president of the company.

Two year after his start in 1983, Mr. Salzwedel became an agent, a district sales manager, and state sales director for eastern Wisconsin. In 2000 he became vice president of personal lines and then was named vice president of American Family’s life insurance company in 2003. Then Mr. Salzwedel became executive vice president in 2004, with oversight of the company’s regional sales operations, marketing, and broker/dealer divisions.

American Family said it is reviewing its executive structure before naming who will take over as president and COO once Mr. Salzwedel assumes his new roles.
